Thiruvananthapuram, June 30 (NationPress) The health status of the esteemed Communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan remains critical, marking the eighth day since his hospitalization following a cardiac arrest.
Achuthanandan, who is 101 years old, was admitted to a private hospital after his son-in-law, a physician, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when the leader experienced a suspected cardiac arrest at home on June 23.
A specialized medical team from the state-run Medical College Hospital was summoned on Monday for a thorough assessment. They conferred with the current medical team and recommended adhering to the existing treatment protocol.
A recent medical bulletin indicated that the team of doctors is diligently working to stabilize the veteran's blood pressure and restore the function of his kidneys, even as he remains on ventilator support.
Since stepping down as Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Committee in January 2021, Achuthanandan has been residing with his children in the state capital, as his residence in Alappuzha remains unoccupied.
During his tenure as the Leader of Opposition from 2001 to 2006, he was known for his vigorous criticism of the then A.K. Antony administration. His ability to connect with many non-political voters significantly contributed to the CPI-M-led LDF's victory in the 2006 Assembly elections, leading him to become Chief Minister.
He subsequently guided the LDF in the 2011 Assembly elections, nearly securing a second consecutive term. However, the Oommen Chandy-led UDF ultimately clinched victory, winning 72 out of 140 seats in the Kerala Assembly.
Numerous political leaders have visited the ailing Achuthanandan in the hospital to meet with his family.
