Government Exposes AI Deepfake Video Targeting Army Chief, Dismisses Pakistani Claims
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) - On Monday, the Indian government refuted misleading claims that have been making the rounds on social media. These include an AI-generated deepfake video featuring General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff, which is being disseminated by accounts linked to Pakistani propaganda in an effort to mislead the public.
In a statement posted on X, the official PIB Fact Check account highlighted that certain Pakistani propaganda accounts are propagating false allegations. They claimed, without basis, that Vice Chief of Navy Sanjay Vatsayan aided in an attack on an Iranian vessel under the orders of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and that Naval Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi is on the verge of resigning.
The PIB firmly labeled these accusations as “fake,” emphasizing that they are part of a broader disinformation strategy aimed at undermining India.
“Pakistani propaganda accounts are disseminating falsehoods about Vice Chief of Navy Sanjay Vatsayan’s involvement in an attack on an Iranian ship, supposedly on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s orders, while also claiming that Naval Chief Dinesh Kumar Tripathi is set to resign,” stated PIB Fact Check.
The organization clarified that these allegations are entirely unfounded and urged the public to depend solely on official government communications for accurate information.
Separately, PIB also issued a warning regarding a digitally altered video of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi being circulated online, along with misleading statements.
The fact-checking division pointed out that the video falsely asserts that General Dwivedi claimed India, as a strategic ally of Israel, had a responsibility to inform Israel of the Iranian ship's precise location when it entered international waters under a “newer strategic deal.”
PIB Fact Check confirmed that this clip is a product of AI manipulation and that the Army Chief has never made such a statement.
“Be cautious! This is an AI-generated deepfake video designed to mislead the public,” the PIB Fact Check post warned, noting that the video has undergone digital manipulation.
To combat misinformation, the agency also provided a link to the original, unaltered video of General Dwivedi’s comments from the Raisina Dialogue 2026 event.
PIB encouraged citizens to be alert against such deceptive materials and recommended reporting any suspicious content through official channels.
“If you encounter dubious content, please report it immediately,” urged the fact-checking unit, providing a WhatsApp helpline number (+91 8799711259) and an email address (factcheck@pib.gov.in) for reporting misinformation.
Authorities have consistently warned that deepfake videos and AI-manipulated content are being increasingly utilized to propagate propaganda and create confusion, particularly during sensitive geopolitical circumstances.
