Patna, May 1 (NationPress) Amid the rush of political factions eager to take credit for the Central government's initiative to implement a nationwide census based on caste, the prevailing sentiment among the populace in Bihar aligns strongly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Numerous locals perceive this action as a strategic move that is likely to sway the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections in favor of the NDA.
In conversations with IANS on Thursday in Patna, a considerable number of individuals lauded the decision, labeling it both “historic” and “politically astute.”
Rakesh Raghav, a Patna City resident, stated: “This is an exceptionally commendable decision made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the first time in post-independence India, such a census is being undertaken. It will guarantee representation according to population — a genuine step towards social justice. This is undoubtedly a masterstroke that will favor the NDA.”
Raghav dismissed the opposition's assertions that the decision was influenced by parties such as Congress and RJD.
“The recognition should go to Nitish Kumar, who initiated the caste survey in Bihar in 2023. There exists a video from 1994 in which Nitish Kumar discussed the necessity of a caste census. PM Modi's decision reflects that enduring vision,” Raghav noted.
Ramanand, another resident of Patna, shared similar sentiments: “The most significant beneficiaries of the caste census will be the impoverished members of lower castes. PM Modi has undertaken a courageous step that will create a lasting impact. Even if RJD has some advantage in caste dynamics, this initiative will alter the public sentiment.”
Ram Awagya Sharma, residing in Masaudhi within Patna district, expressed firm support, saying: “I back the Prime Minister's decision. His policies have consistently favored the common people. The opposition parties have been calling for this for years - but why didn't they act when they had the chance?”
Baby Kumari Ambedkar from Saran district remarked: “It’s a positive development that castes will receive representation in accordance with their population. This is advantageous not only to political entities but to the public as well.”
She also criticized RJD’s “Mai-Bahin Maan Yojana”: “For them, Mai refers to Rabri Devi and Bahin to Misa Bharti - it's a family scheme, not meant for the people.”
Srinath Singh, known as Munna, a Patna resident, pointed out the broader implications: “This caste-based census will significantly influence the Bihar assembly elections. For the first time, we will have authentic data on caste demographics in Bihar and throughout the nation.”
Although the opposition seeks to claim moral high ground, many voters question their inaction during their tenure in power.
