New Delhi, Oct 1 (NationPress) The unveiling of the final electoral list for Bihar, following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), has ignited a political uproar. The BJP and Congress present starkly differing accounts. The BJP asserts that this initiative aims to purge the rolls of fraudulent voters, while Congress accuses the process of widespread voter disenfranchisement, particularly impacting the underprivileged and marginalized groups.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi defended the SIR effort, stating that it is a fundamental aspect of the democratic process.
“The primary goal is to safeguard legitimate voters by assessing and eliminating bogus voters. This is not an isolated event; such reviews of voter lists have been routinely conducted throughout the nation’s electoral history,” Naqvi remarked.
Conversely, Congress representatives have voiced serious apprehensions. Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai criticized the Election Commission, claiming that authentic voters are being unjustly excluded.
“In Bihar, the concerns raised by Rahul Gandhi regarding voter exclusion are highly significant. The way in which ordinary citizens and the impoverished have been stripped of their voting rights by the Election Commission is intolerable. They should be included, not excluded. The Aadhaar card must be acknowledged as a valid document, and the names of these individuals should be incorporated into the voter list,” Rai asserted.
The Election Commission has finalized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, revealing a final count of 7.42 crore electors.
Congress leader Udit Raj claimed that a nationwide trend of manipulation exists. He stated, “Had the opposition not protested and escalated the issue to the Supreme Court, the 2.1 million new voters now added would still be unaccounted for. Whether any manipulation transpired among these voters is yet to be determined.”
“A systematic model appears to be in operation across states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, where fraudulent voters are inserted while opposition supporters are eliminated from the rolls. The updated voter list was disclosed yesterday. Our party is meticulously reviewing it. The matter is already subject to Supreme Court scrutiny, and our next course of action will be revealed shortly,” he added.
On Tuesday, the Election Commission confirmed the successful completion of the SIR process, reporting that 7.89 crore voters were listed as of June 24.
