Guwahati, April 20 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation has ramped up its nationwide efforts to combat cybercrime infrastructure through Operation Chakra-V, making a significant arrest in Guwahati involving a principal conspirator linked to a major SIM card fraud operation.

The suspect, known as Ubaid Ullah, was taken into custody during the early hours of April 19 after evading authorities since August 2025, as detailed in an official announcement released on Monday.

Ubaid Ullah is accused of being a crucial player in the acquisition and distribution of illegally obtained SIM cards, which were employed by cybercriminal syndicates to carry out various financial and social engineering scams.

Investigators have revealed that this case involves the exploitation of Point of Sale (POS) agents who improperly issued SIM cards without adequate verification, thus facilitating organized cybercrime.

According to the CBI, these SIM cards were reportedly utilized in schemes such as “digital arrest” scams, fraudulent loan operations, and fake investment schemes, targeting unsuspecting individuals nationwide.

The investigation indicates that Ubaid Ullah acted as a significant aggregator in Guwahati, managing the illicit SIM card supply chain. He is believed to have transferred approximately Rs 67 lakh through various bank accounts to POS agents in return for around 10,000 fraudulently acquired SIM cards. Additional evidence suggests the use of courier services for transporting these SIM cards, highlighting a well-organized and systematic network.

As the investigation continues, the agency has conducted searches at nearly 45 locations across eight states, resulting in the arrest of 10 POS agents allegedly involved in this operation.

CBI officials assert that this network is vital for organized cybercrime, providing fraudsters with anonymous communication channels.

Operation Chakra-V aims to dismantle such critical infrastructures that enable cybercriminal activities. The agency has emphasized a strategic shift towards targeting facilitators and logistics networks instead of merely focusing on the end perpetrators.

The CBI reiterated its determination to fight organized cybercrime through coordinated efforts, intelligence-led operations, and collaboration between agencies. Ongoing efforts are being made to identify and capture other key conspirators associated with this network.

Point of View

The CBI's proactive measures in arresting key figures involved in cybercrime reflect a commitment to safeguarding citizens from fraudulent schemes. This operation not only disrupts criminal networks but also reinforces the importance of verification in financial transactions.
