New Delhi, May 26 (NationPress) In a significant operation targeting the smuggling of Red Sanders to Dubai, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) apprehended a smuggler in Chennai following a search of two locations linked to the illegal export of the prohibited wood valued at Rs 68 crore, according to an official statement released on Monday.
Abdul Jaffer, who had evaded capture for four years and failed to attend court despite multiple summons, was taken into custody by the ED’s Nagpur Sub-Zonal Office, the official confirmed.
The raids conducted on May 22 aimed to expose the illicit operations of a syndicate engaged in large-scale smuggling of Red Sanders to Dubai by substituting the declared sponge iron in shipping containers with Red Sanders.
Investigators uncovered various assets, including land, buildings, apartments, and luxury vehicles, acquired by the suspect through the proceeds of crime, amounting to crores of rupees, along with other incriminating evidence, said the official.
Post-arrest, Jaffer was transported to Nagpur by ED officials under a Transit Remand sanctioned by the Jurisdiction Court in Chennai.
On Saturday in Nagpur, he was presented before the Special Court (PMLA), which remanded him to ED custody until May 28, the statement indicated.
The ED's inquiry began following a Prosecution Complaint lodged by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Nagpur, under Section 135 of the Customs Act, 1962, against Jaffer and others.
According to the ED, investigations revealed that Jaffer had illicitly exported as many as 13 shipments of Red Sanders to Dubai by replacing sponge iron, which was being exported by a Raipur-based company.
The total value of the smuggled Red Sanders is estimated at Rs 68 crore, excluding a shipment that was intercepted and seized by the DRI, the official stated.
Furthermore, Jaffer’s involvement has been linked to multiple other Red Sanders smuggling cases under investigation by other DRI units.
