Raipur, July 21 (NationPress) The Congress party in Chhattisgarh has declared a statewide chakka jam on July 22 to protest the recent arrest of Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
This protest, set to occur from 12 noon to 2 pm, will involve road blockades across various district headquarters, targeting major highways and commercial hubs.
Prominent Congress figures, such as Deepak Baij, Charandas Mahant, TS Singhdeo, and Bhupesh Baghel himself, are slated to spearhead this agitation.
In the capital city of Raipur, the National Highway near VIP Chowk and Magneto Mall will be obstructed, while Dharsiwa is expected to see significant mobilization from rural Congress supporters. The party has framed these protests as a response to what they deem as politically motivated misuse of central agencies aimed at intimidating dissenting voices.
The ED apprehended Chaitanya Baghel on July 18 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, alleging his involvement in a liquor scam that reportedly spanned from 2019 to 2022.
The agency claims the scam resulted in a loss exceeding Rs 2500 crore to the state treasury. Investigators assert that Baghel received Rs 16.70 crore from proceeds of crime, which were allegedly funneled through his real estate businesses.
The ED has also accused Baghel of collaborating with businessman Trilok Singh Dhillon to launder illicit funds as legitimate property deals, including Rs 5 crore linked to flat purchases in the Vitthalpuram Project.
Moreover, the agency has uncovered over Rs 1000 crore in dubious transactions associated with Baghel and his associates, including ties to liquor syndicate members and purported transfers to the former treasurer of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee.
Several individuals have already been arrested in connection with this case, including former IAS officer Anil Tuteja and former Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma.
Congress leaders have dismissed these allegations as part of a wider campaign to undermine the party's leadership in the state and distract from critical resource exploitation issues.
Bhupesh Baghel has publicly accused the BJP-led central government of orchestrating this arrest to stifle dissent regarding environmental matters.
As the ED continues its investigation, the Congress-led chakka jam is poised to test both public sentiment and existing political divides in a state already rife with tension.
