New Delhi, June 1 (NationPress) On Sunday, the Congress party officially announced Rameshbhai Chavda as their chosen candidate for the upcoming by-election set for June 19 in Gujarat's Kadi Assembly Constituency.
Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal stated, "The candidature of Rameshbhai Chavda has been sanctioned by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for the forthcoming bypoll."
Kadi is one of five Assembly constituencies across three states participating in the bypolls on June 19, alongside Visavadar in Gujarat, Ludhiana-West in Punjab, Nilambur in Kerala, and Kaliganj in West Bengal.
The Election Commission had earlier indicated that the bypolls for both Visavadar and Kadi would occur on June 19.
Votes are scheduled to be counted on June 23.
Additionally, the by-election for the Visavadar seat is anticipated to feature a competitive triangular contest involving the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party.
Interestingly, despite being part of the INDIA bloc and collaborating with the AAP in the alliance, the Congress has declared its intention to contest the bypoll independently.
Earlier this year, in March, the AAP designated former Gujarat unit chief Gopal Italia as its candidate for the Visavadar Assembly bypoll.
The Kadi Assembly seat, located in Gujarat's Mehsana district, became vacant in February due to the death of BJP legislator Karsan Solanki.
Both ruling BJP and opposition Congress leaders are expressing optimism about their performance in the forthcoming bypolls.
Notably, in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, the BJP holds 161 MLAs, the Congress possesses 12, and the AAP has 4 legislators.
The Election Commission announced that electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verified paper audit trails (VVPATs) will be utilized at all polling stations during the by-election.
"A sufficient number of EVMs and VVPATs have been arranged, and measures are in place to guarantee a smooth polling process using these devices," the statement noted.
