New Delhi, April 13 (NationPress) In a lively lead-up to Ambedkar Jayanti, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Ashish Sood inaugurated a marathon event in the capital on Sunday.
This run is part of a series of initiatives organized by the Delhi government to celebrate the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, whose birth anniversary is observed on April 14.
Baba Saheb Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in the military cantonment of Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. He was an influential Indian jurist, economist, social reformer, and political leader. Ambedkar chaired the committee responsible for drafting the Constitution of India and served as the Minister of Law and Justice in the first cabinet under former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The Delhi government is commemorating this occasion with great enthusiasm after Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena announced earlier this week that April 14 will be a public holiday for all government offices, autonomous bodies, and PSUs under the Delhi administration.
While addressing the participants and onlookers, CM Gupta stated, "Baba Saheb lives on in our hearts and minds. The path he illuminated remains timeless. His birth anniversary is celebrated not just in India but globally with tremendous enthusiasm; it has evolved into a festive occasion lasting several days."
"These celebrations are happening nationwide, and tomorrow, the entire country will unite to honor the occasion with great jubilation," she added.
The Chief Minister praised the involvement of children in the marathon, stressing that the teachings and ideals of Dr. Ambedkar should be actively upheld.
"Today’s walkathon was truly uplifting. Hundreds of children participated, demonstrating how Baba Saheb's message continues to motivate new generations. He should not only be remembered but lived through our deeds," she stated.
Gupta further mentioned that the Delhi government is dedicated to ensuring access to education, healthcare, and equality, in line with Ambedkar's vision. She encouraged schools and students to study Ambedkar and his principles.
In a critique of opposition parties, CM Gupta accused past governments of politicizing Dr. Ambedkar's legacy.
"They attempted to confine Baba Saheb’s image to a specific caste, but he was a hero for the entire world," she asserted.
In a subtle jab at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, she questioned, "Is the Leader of Opposition present in India to celebrate Baba Saheb's birth anniversary?"
In a statement to IANS, Education Minister Ashish Sood honored Ambedkar as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and expressed concerns regarding its misuse.
"The original Constitution did not include anything like 'Waqf'. Those who now speak grandly about the Constitution are, in fact, distorting Ambedkar's vision. It is unfortunate that in Bengal, under the Congress regime, the very Constitution he crafted was disregarded," he remarked.
Highlighting the BJP's commitment to Ambedkar's ideals, Sood pointed out the establishment of 'Panch Teerth' — five dedicated sites to Ambedkar across India — by the BJP government at the Centre.
"Similar events are being hosted in various state capitals to pay tribute to Baba Saheb on his birth anniversary," he added.
Ambedkar Jayanti will be celebrated throughout Delhi on Monday with cultural programs, public lectures, and tribute gatherings at memorials and educational institutions.
