New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis honored Divya Deshmukh, the first Indian woman to secure victory in the FIDE Women’s World Cup, presenting her with a cash prize of Rs 3 crore during the 'Nagari Sanman Sohala' event held in Nagpur on Saturday.
Maharashtra Sports Minister Manikrao Shivajirao Kokate was also in attendance. During her speech, Divya expressed heartfelt thanks to CM Fadnavis and the residents of Nagpur for their acknowledgment.
Just last week, the 19-year-old prodigy made chess history by triumphing over Grandmaster Humpy Koneru with a score of 1.5–0.5 in the tiebreaks, becoming the youngest player ever to win the Women’s World title in Batumi and automatically attaining the prestigious Grandmaster (GM) title, the pinnacle of chess.
Her victory also secured her a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, alongside runner-ups GM Humpy Koneru and former Women’s World Champion Tan Zhongyi.
On Friday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also celebrated the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025 medallists, Divya and Koneru, in New Delhi.
Mandaviya personally congratulated Divya, who became the 88th Grandmaster of India and the 4th Indian woman to achieve this title, recognizing her groundbreaking win in the FIDE Women’s World Cup, while Koneru attended the ceremony virtually.
"This tournament was a monumental test of resilience, stretching over a long period, which undoubtedly challenged my physical and emotional endurance, as well as my ability to manage nerves in critical moments. Resilience was key in reaching this far, along with a relentless fighting spirit," Divya shared with IANS on Friday.
The FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025, which took place from July 5–28 in Batumi, featured a groundbreaking all-Indian final between the young talent Divya and the experienced GM Koneru, marking the first time two Indian women reached the finals.
