Did DMDK Join the DMK-Led Alliance for the Assembly Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 19 (NationPress) In a crucial political shift ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) officially aligned with the DMK-led coalition on Wednesday, marking the first collaboration between the two since DMDK's establishment in 2005.
DMDK's general secretary Premalatha Vijayakant met with Chief Minister and DMK leader M. K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters in Chennai to formalize the partnership.
This meeting holds significant political weight as it reflects a shifting dynamic in the state's electoral scenario.
Speaking to the press post-meeting, Premalatha stated that the allocation of Assembly seats to the DMDK would be determined through discussions with a committee set to be formed by the DMK for alliance negotiations.
"Seat-sharing will be finalized after comprehensive discussions with the DMK's team," she noted, suggesting that formal negotiations would commence soon.
Welcoming DMDK into the coalition, Stalin expressed that the party's inclusion would fortify the alliance and assist in maintaining DMK governance in Tamil Nadu.
In a message shared on social media platform X, he remarked, "May your entry into the DMK alliance enhance the state's development. Together, we will strive for the comprehensive growth of Tamil Nadu."
Sources have indicated that the DMDK might be offered a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the agreement.
Premalatha mentioned that the announcement regarding the Upper House position would be "officially made by Stalin" at a suitable moment.
Characterizing the decision as one supported by the majority of DMDK members, Premalatha reflected on previous discussions of an alliance with the DMK that arose prior to the 2016 Assembly elections but ultimately did not materialize.
"This should have occurred in 2016. Now, after ten years and following the passing of our founder Vijayakant, it is finally happening," she said.
The DMDK has encountered electoral challenges in recent years. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the party participated in an alliance led by the AMMK but did not secure any seats. The party also failed to win any seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while aligned with the AIADMK.
