Why Has the ED Summoned Actor Jayaram in the Sabarimala Theft Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Feb 10 (NationPress) The investigation into the alleged gold theft at the Sabarimala shrine has reached a significant juncture as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned the immensely popular Malayalam actor Jayaram for questioning.
The ED has sent a formal notice instructing the actor to appear at its office in Kochi on February 17.
Jayaram is being questioned due to his connection with Unnikrishnan Potti, the main suspect in this highly publicized case.
Sources indicate that the ED is examining whether the accused benefitted financially from gold meant for Sabarimala.
As part of this investigation, the agency seeks to clarify Jayaram's ties and any alleged financial transactions with Potti.
Officials believe that Jayaram's testimony could uncover vital information regarding the financial connections involved in the alleged theft of gold.
Previously, images surfaced showing Dwarapalaka (gatekeeper) idols from the Sannidhanam being brought to Jayaram's home, where rituals were conducted.
Last month, Jayaram informed the Kerala High Court-appointed Kerala Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) that these rituals were performed solely for spiritual reasons and aimed at bringing prosperity to his household, asserting that he was unaware of any illicit activities purportedly carried out by Potti.
The SIT had subsequently interrogated the actor, cleared him of wrongdoing, and considered him a witness in the ongoing case.
However, the ED, which is independently scrutinizing the financial trail under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, has initiated its own inquiry.
Jayaram is anticipated to reaffirm to the ED that he knows Potti as a devotee and an acquaintance from Chennai and that the gold plates were brought to his residence solely for pooja.
It remains to be seen whether the agency will accept this account.
Sources suggest that Jayaram is likely to be regarded as a witness in the ED investigation as well.
Investigators have disclosed that during the construction phase at Sabarimala, Potti allegedly transferred wooden planks, doors, and other sacred items from the shrine to various locations, conducting poojas and prayers while collecting money by fostering the belief that possessing such objects would enhance prosperity at home.
Meanwhile, the ED has summoned 12 additional individuals beyond those identified as suspects by the SIT, of which only three are currently on the SIT's accused list.
The investigation is still primarily focused on officials, with further developments and potential arrests anticipated in the coming days as the case continues to garner significant public and political interest.
