As per police reports, flames erupted unexpectedly at the SDO office located on Hill Cart Road in Mallaguri in the early hours of Thursday.
Consequently, two rooms within the SDO office were completely engulfed in flames.
Numerous computers and official documents housed in those rooms were also lost. Thankfully, due to the swift response of the fire brigade, a larger catastrophe was averted. It was reported that shortly past midnight, security personnel and nearby residents noticed thick black smoke emanating from one of the rooms.
The office's security team promptly began their efforts to extinguish the flames.
Authorities from the Pradhan Nagar Police Station and the Fire Department were quickly alerted. Two fire engines responded and arrived swiftly at the scene.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control in a short period. However, detailed assessments of the damage caused by the fire are still pending.
According to sources from the Fire Department, the documents in the affected rooms were largely consumed by the flames. Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.
SDO Vikas Ruhela arrived at the scene shortly after the fire broke out. Reports indicate that Darjeeling District Magistrate (DM) Manish Mishra and Superintendent of Police (SP) Praween Prakash also sought information regarding the fire incident. Siliguri Mayor Goutam Deb has also shown his concern.
Regarding the fire, SDO Ruhela commented, "At this moment, we cannot provide specific details about the incident."
Dharmendra Krishna Roy, the Station Officer at the Siliguri fire station, informed local media, "Two fire engines responded quickly and brought the situation under control. Initially, heavy smoke obstructed our entry into the building. Fortunately, the fire is now contained. We will investigate the damage and the fire's origin.”
