Kochi, March 21 (NationPress) A high-level investigation has been initiated regarding a fire incident that occurred in the kitchen of a police station in Kochi, Kerala, where bullets were ignited in a pan.
The event took place on March 11 at the kitchen associated with a Kerala Police camp.
A senior police official confirmed to IANS that the event had transpired, and the investigation is currently underway.
This unusual occurrence came to light when the police camp received a request for a squad to be present for the ceremonial farewell of a deceased officer.
In Kerala, it is customary for the police to provide a squad when the state government arranges a dignified funeral for any deceased individual. Once the necessary permissions are granted, police personnel arrive in uniform, stand in front of the remains, and fire upwards as a tribute to the departed.
On March 11, when such a call was received, the official responsible for ammunition at the Police camp, C.V. Sajeevan, took action to prepare the necessary personnel and materials for honoring the deceased colleague.
While preparing the firearms and ammunition for the ceremony, Sajeevan noticed that some bullets appeared rusty.
With limited time before the ceremony, Sajeevan determined that he could not afford to sun-dry and clean the rusted bullets with a cloth.
In a bid for a quick fix, Sajeevan reasoned that a little heat might clean the bullets. He took several to the kitchen, placed them in a pan, and ignited a flame beneath.
To his surprise, the bullets detonated, resulting in a fire. Fortunately, the flames were extinguished swiftly without causing any significant damage to the kitchen, where gas cylinders were stored.
The investigation has commenced, and senior officials are awaiting a comprehensive report for further actions.
