Los Angeles, Nov 5 (NationPress) Hollywood icons Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are gearing up to reunite for the much-anticipated fourth chapter of the action-adventure series “Mummy”.

Universal Pictures is set to revisit one of its cherished action-adventure franchises, with Fraser and Weisz reportedly in talks to reprise their roles from the studio's Mummy films of the late 1990s and early 2000s, as indicated by multiple sources to deadline.com.

According to deadline.com, the directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence will helm the project, based on a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The producing team includes franchise veteran Sean Daniel alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.

This project marks a reunion for Radio Silence and Project X, following their collaboration on the reboot of the Scream franchise, with films released up until next year’s Scream 7, which Radio Silence did not direct, but Project X did produce.

Fraser and Weisz starred together in two Mummy films: the original 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns, both inspired by early 20th-century movie monsters, directed by Stephen Sommers, and each grossing over $400 million globally.

The 1999 feature introduced Fraser as Rick O’Connell, a daring American adventurer and ex-French Foreign Legion soldier, and Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan, an English Egyptologist at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities.

Throughout the two films, the characters evolve from hesitant allies to a married couple with a young child, confronting ancient curses from figures like the resurrected Egyptian high priest Imhotep. Weisz’s character meets her demise in the sequel, discovering she is the reincarnation of an Egyptian princess, but is ultimately revived by Rick.

This franchise significantly contributed to Fraser's rise as a leading star in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It continued with the 2002 spinoff The Scorpion King, featuring Dwayne Johnson, which made over $180 million globally, and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Fraser returned without Weisz under the direction of Rob Cohen.

Fraser is enjoying a resurgence in his career following his Academy Award win for The Whale and is back on the awards circuit this season with Searchlight’s Rental Family, directed by Hikari, which is set to release on November 21.

Weisz, also an Oscar winner, has recently completed projects such as Prime Video’s Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow.

Point of View

I find the reunion of Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser in the fourth Mummy film a promising development for both fans and the franchise itself. It showcases Hollywood's ability to revive cherished narratives while also highlighting the career resurgence of both actors. This project could not only reignite interest in the franchise but also pave the way for new storytelling possibilities.
