Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka on Tuesday, 21 July strongly condemned the alleged assault on Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officials during a footpath encroachment clearance drive in Shivajinagar, calling it evidence of a deepening law and order crisis in Karnataka. Police have already arrested several persons in connection with the incident and an investigation is under way.

What Happened in Shivajinagar

GBA officials conducting a routine footpath encroachment removal drive in Shivajinagar, Bengaluru, were allegedly attacked by a group of individuals. The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the ruling Congress-led state government of allowing civic authority to erode. Police have made multiple arrests and are continuing their probe.

Ashoka's Broadside Against the Government

Ashoka described the assault as 'highly condemnable' and questioned the state government's conspicuous silence. 'The murderous attack on a GBA official carrying out a footpath encroachment clearance drive in Shivajinagar is highly condemnable. Such an attack on a government officer discharging his duties is living proof of how badly law and order has deteriorated in the state,' Ashoka said.

He specifically targeted Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, accusing him of selective activism. 'Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who makes reels in front of cameras during encroachment drives in other parts of Bengaluru, why are you silent now? Isn't it your responsibility to stand behind officials when they are attacked? Or is your vote-bank politics more important than the rule of law?' he asked.

Chief Minister Shivakumar in the Crosshairs

Ashoka also turned his fire on Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, questioning whether political considerations were being placed above enforcement of the law. 'Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, why is your government silent even after a murderous attack on officials carrying out their lawful duties? Is political calculation more important to you than enforcing the law? Doesn't the government's silence in such cases amount to indirectly protecting the perpetrators?' he said.

The BJP leader further questioned whether the government had the political will to carry out encroachment drives specifically in Shivajinagar. 'Does the government not have the courage to remove encroachments in Shivajinagar? Or do the laws of the land not apply to certain areas? Is there a system of two different laws in the state?' Ashoka asked.

BJP's Demands

Ashoka demanded the immediate arrest of all accused and called for stringent legal action. 'The accused must be arrested immediately and stringent legal action must be initiated. The safety of officials carrying out their duties must be ensured. Prove through action, and not merely words, that everyone is equal before the law,' he added. This comes amid broader BJP criticism of the Karnataka government's handling of civic law enforcement across Bengaluru.

With police investigations ongoing and political pressure mounting, the state government's next move — whether to publicly respond or accelerate action against the accused — will be closely watched.
