HDFC Bank names Anup Bagchi as MD & CEO, takes charge Oct 27
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
HDFC Bank on 1 October 2026 formally appointed Anup Bagchi as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, following regulatory clearance from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The announcement, made through a stock exchange filing, marks a pivotal leadership transition at India's largest private sector lender.
The Transition Timeline
Bagchi, currently MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, will assume charge on 27 October 2026, a day after incumbent MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan's tenure concludes on 26 October 2026. Jagdishan had opted not to seek reappointment for another term, making way for fresh leadership at the helm.
In its filing, HDFC Bank also confirmed Bagchi's appointment as an Additional Director with effect from 2 October 2026, pending shareholders' approval under the Companies Act, 2013. The RBI has approved both the appointment and remuneration under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
What the Bank Said
The bank's official filing stated: 'The Board of Directors of the Bank, based on the recommendation of the Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee, at its meeting held today i.e. October 1, 2026 approved the following: (a) appointment of Anup Bagchi as an Additional Director of the Bank w.e.f. October 2, 2026 till the date of approval of the shareholders as per the provisions of Companies Act, 2013; (b) appointment of Anup Bagchi as the MD & CEO of the Bank on such terms and conditions including remuneration, as approved by the RBI, for a period of 3 (three) years with effect from October 27, 2026, subject to approval of the shareholders.'
The Selection Process
HDFC Bank had earlier submitted two names to the RBI for consideration for the top position: Anup Bagchi and the bank's Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha. The regulator's approval of Bagchi ends a period of succession speculation that had drawn sustained market attention.
Broader Banking Sector Reshuffle
The appointment is part of a wider churn at the top of India's banking sector. Earlier on the same day, Kotak Mahindra Bank announced the appointment of Anup Kumar Saha as its new MD and CEO, signalling simultaneous leadership changes across two of India's most closely watched private lenders.
HDFC Bank shares closed 1.76% higher at ₹721.20 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ahead of the formal announcement, reflecting positive investor sentiment ahead of the transition. Markets appear to have welcomed the resolution of succession uncertainty as the bank prepares to enter its next phase under Bagchi's leadership.
