Karnataka Lokayukta Justice B.S. Patil on Thursday, 30 April ordered a suo motu probe into the Bowring Hospital compound wall collapse in Bengaluru, which killed seven people, including a girl child, and left several others injured. Justice Patil visited the site alongside Upalokayukta Justice K.N. Phaneendra and Upalokayukta Justice B. Veerappa, and also sought a formal report from the Medical Education Department.
What Caused the Collapse
The compound wall of Bowring Hospital gave way on Wednesday, 29 April, following heavy rain accompanied by hail and thunderstorms. Justice Patil, after inspecting the site, said the wall's failure was not solely a natural disaster. He noted that debris had been dumped at the base, a large quantity of sand had accumulated, and the structure had a weak foundation combined with the use of cement blocks in its construction — all of which contributed to the tragedy.
The wall is reportedly around 18 years old. Justice Patil stated that authorities would examine whether the foundation met quality standards and whether structural integrity was maintained over the years.
