Gujarat Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Exotic Animal and Bird Trade
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, March 1 (NationPress) - The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has dismantled a suspected illegal operation involving the breeding and sale of exotic animals and birds from a residential unit in the Navrangpura locality, officials disclosed on Sunday.
Following reliable intelligence, authorities executed a raid at a flat in Ravalbhai Apartment, uncovering a significant number of foreign species being housed and bred within cages in this residential area.
Officials noted that many of these species are rare and command high prices globally.
Among the animals rescued were an extraordinarily rare Red-handed Tamarin monkey infant, seven Persian cats along with their kittens, 14 hamsters of varying sizes, 15 Mini Lop rabbits, and nine Leather Lab Dwarf animals.
The seized birds encompassed six African Grey Parrots, five Blue and Gold Macaws, three Eclectus Parrots, four Sun Conures, two Galah Cockatoos, and one Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
Additionally, a multitude of African lovebirds, conures, cockatiels, budgerigars, and finches were discovered at the location.
The Crime Branch indicated that the documentation provided by the accused through the government's PARIVESH portal appeared prima facie incomplete and raised suspicions.
"The documents presented via the PARIVESH portal seem inadequate and cast doubts on their authenticity," stated a senior official from the Crime Branch to IANS.
Authorities expressed concerns that housing such a vast array of wild and exotic species in a densely populated area without proper biosecurity measures poses a significant public health threat.
"Keeping exotic and wild species in a residential environment without biosecurity protocols can facilitate the spread of zoonotic diseases, jeopardizing the health of local residents," the official remarked, emphasizing that using a residential property for commercial breeding activities constitutes a severe regulatory infringement.
Officials confirmed that the Forest Department, the Municipal Corporation, and the Customs Department will collaborate to verify the legitimacy of the documents, investigate the legality of the imports, and evaluate potential health risks as part of a comprehensive investigation.
"We have alerted the Forest Department and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. They will initiate a formal complaint regarding this matter. No arrests have been made at this point, and we are coordinating with relevant authorities for further actions," the official added.
