New Delhi, May 23 (NationPress) - India and the US have made significant strides toward finalizing a mutually advantageous trade agreement, according to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. This development comes as discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick continue regarding the initial phase of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
India presents a strong argument for a bilateral trade deal with the US, particularly considering its promising growth trajectory and demographic advantages.
In a recent update on the social media platform X, Goyal mentioned, “I had a productive meeting with Secretary Howard Lutnick to discuss a mutually advantageous trade agreement.”
The minister asserted that both nations are “dedicated to creating more opportunities for our businesses and citizens.”
Efforts are underway to finalize the first phase of the BTA, which aims to reduce tariffs ahead of the agreed timeline of late 2025, as the terms of reference for the agreement have already been established.
Previously, Goyal noted that “very constructive negotiations” were taking place with the US.
“Given the growth potential in India over the next 25-30 years, coupled with a large and aspirational young population eager to consume goods and services, we believe India represents a strong case for an effective agreement with the US,” Goyal informed reporters.
A successful agreement to reduce tariffs could significantly enhance trade between the US and India. During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Washington, DC, he and US President Donald Trump set an ambitious goal of achieving $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
Recently, the US President indicated that India proposed to eliminate all tariffs on American products, but he mentioned that he is not in a hurry to finalize the trade deal despite the apparent progress.
