Shillong, Sep 14 (NationPress) The concluding event of the 14th iteration of the India-Royal Thai Army joint military exercise, ‘Maitree-XIV’, took place at the foreign training facility in Meghalaya’s Umroi cantonment on Sunday, according to official reports.
Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat stated that the primary objective of the exercise was to enhance interoperability and familiarize each other with operational protocols and combat maneuvers.
It was clear from the observations made that both armies succeeded in achieving this objective, he mentioned.
As per the spokesperson, the two-week exercise was conducted under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). Both contingents engaged in all tactical training drills and operational discussions. The exercise concluded with a 48-hour-long validation exercise that encompassed the formation of a Temporary Operating Base (TOB), establishment of an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) grid, village isolation, heliborne operations, and execution of a raid and hostage rescue, the spokesperson noted.
The training also showcased and actively utilized new-generation equipment from both armies.
Lt Col Rawat mentioned that the closing ceremony was held as a significant occasion to honor outstanding soldiers and to celebrate the cultural and martial heritage of both nations.
A series of events highlighting the rich culture and heritage of both countries were organized. Valuable combat experiences and best practices were shared between the two armies. He added that besides the training, both contingents also participated in various extracurricular activities, including friendly matches of volleyball, basketball, tug-of-war, and a cultural event on the final day to foster camaraderie among troops.
The joint training was undeniably a remarkable success and another crucial milestone in fostering friendly relations between the two nations, the spokesperson remarked.
Apart from promoting understanding and interoperability between the two armies, it further solidified ties between both countries, he added.
The Indian Army contingent consisted of 120 personnel from a Madras Regiment battalion, while the Royal Thai Army was represented by 53 personnel from the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 14th Infantry Brigade.
The two-week program included tactical drills, joint planning, specialized arms training, physical fitness, and raiding operations. Exercise Maitree, which began in 2006, is a significant joint training initiative between India and Thailand.
The current edition strengthens bilateral defense collaboration and reflects the mutual commitment of both armies towards peace, stability, and security in the region, the spokesperson stated.
This bilateral exercise is part of the ongoing military-to-military exchange program between the two nations and aims to enhance cooperation, interoperability, and mutual understanding between the Indian Army and Royal Thai Army.
