India's T20 WC Strategy: Axar and Samson in, Zimbabwe Bowl First
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 26 (NationPress) In a significant move, India has included spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson in their playing eleven as Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to bowl first during the crucial Super Eights match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai this Thursday.
Both teams are in dire need of a win following substantial defeats to South Africa and the West Indies. With South Africa's victory over the West Indies in Ahmedabad, India must win their remaining matches to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
For the defending champions, Axar replaces Washington Sundar, while Samson, who will also take on keeping responsibilities, comes in for Rinku Singh. This adjustment pushes Ishan Kishan to the number three position, aiming to create a balanced top order, while Tilak Varma is set at number five.
The Chepauk crowd erupted in cheers when India captain Suryakumar Yadav announced Samson would be playing. "I’m pleased with this choice. We’re ready to bat first. The atmosphere in the camp is positive. The way Hardik spoke in the huddle indicates his experience and the value he brings to the team," Yadav said.
“The team needed this, and I believe we'll perform well tonight. Win or lose, there's always a lesson. Let's forget the past match and continue playing as we have been for the past year. Enjoy the game without fear,” he added.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza confirmed that Tinotenda Maposa has replaced Graeme Cremer as a tactical adjustment, stating, “This isn’t your typical Chennai wicket. It appears damp, so we want to give our seamers the best opportunity. If we can limit India’s score, it will be beneficial. Both teams are feeling the pressure.”
