Devotees across India are observing Krishna Janmashtami on Friday, 4 September with deep faith and festive spirit, as temples fill with devotional chants, cities light up with decorations, and grand processions mark the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. From Mathura to Mumbai, the celebrations reflect the occasion's enduring spiritual significance for millions of Hindus.

Mathura: The Birthplace at the Heart of It All

At Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh — considered the birthplace of Lord Krishna — large crowds gathered through the day for prayers and darshan. The atmosphere, according to those present, was one of collective devotion. One devotee summed up the sentiment: 'Everything is by the grace of Kanha Ji. It is His divine play and His illusion; only He knows. The whole world is dancing to His tune, otherwise no human being has the power. What can a human being do?'

Celebrations Across Punjab and Bihar

In Kapurthala, Punjab, a grand procession was taken out from the Shri Satyanarayan Temple, with special religious programmes held across the city. Temple priest Shri Satyanarayan extended greetings to devotees, saying, 'On the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, I extend my heartfelt greetings to everyone, as today marks the birth celebration of Banke Bihari. The birth celebration of Thakur Ji is being celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm across the world.'

In Patiala, devotees visited the Shri Radha Krishna Temple in Model Town to seek darshan of Laddu Gopal. Meanwhile, in Patna, Bihar, the ISKCON Temple drew large crowds from the morning. A devotee noted, 'The arrangements are very good. This year, they are even better than in previous years. There is no inconvenience. Darshan may be delayed by around half an hour.'

ISKCON Mumbai Marks 60 Years of Spiritual Service

The ISKCON Temple in Chowpatty, Mumbai held special significance this Janmashtami, as the organisation marks 60 years of its spiritual journey and service. A priest at the temple said, 'This Janmashtami is very special for ISKCON because today ISKCON has completed 60 years. On this occasion, very good preparations have been made.' Thousands of devotees gathered for Mukh Darshan through the day.

Amritsar and Delhi Join the Celebrations

In Amritsar, the Durgiana Temple was adorned with flowers and colourful lights, with devotees arriving from early morning. A temple priest noted that the formal birth celebration of Lord Krishna would be observed at midnight, followed by the traditional Panchamrit Snan of Laddu Gopal, after which devotees would receive blessings. In Delhi, preparations were underway at the Prachin Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place for the evening's festivities.

Janmashtami, observed on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, draws millions of devotees to temples nationwide each year, reaffirming its place as one of India's most widely celebrated religious occasions. Midnight observances and community gatherings are expected to continue into the early hours of Saturday.
