Kolkata, April 3 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated an inquiry into the harassment incident involving judicial officers at Kaliachak in West Bengal's Malda district that took place on the night of April 1. As of Friday afternoon, the total number of arrests made by the state police has risen to 33.

Additional Director General (North Bengal), K. Jayaraman, confirmed the increase in arrests to the press, stating that 19 cases have been filed concerning both the harassment of judicial officers and the illegal blockades that occurred in various areas of Kaliachak from Wednesday to Thursday.

Among the 33 arrests, the most notable is Mofakkarul Islam, a lawyer and leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), who was apprehended at Bagdogra Airport while attempting to flee the state.

“He was the key figure inciting the crowd at Kaliachak on Wednesday,” Jayaraman said. “Islam was arrested alongside his close associate, Akramul Bagani, as they intended to escape to Bengaluru. The NIA may take custody of him if needed.”

Jayaraman also noted that three cases have been filed against Islam in connection with the Kaliachak incident. He emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway to determine if he has been involved in any other illegal activities either in Malda or elsewhere. “We will take stringent legal action against him. There will be no leniency,” he added.

On the issue of the delay in responding to the crowd that held judicial officers hostage for several hours, he acknowledged that the presence of women and children complicated the police response. “We had sufficient resources, but we had to proceed with caution. I cannot comment further since this matter is now with the Supreme Court,” he stated.

On Wednesday, seven judicial officers, including three women, were held hostage inside a block office at Kaliachak by voters whose names had been removed during the judicial adjudication process due to “logical discrepancies.”

In the early hours of Thursday, a large police contingent led by senior district officials successfully dispersed the protesters and rescued the judicial officers after they had been gheraoed for nearly nine hours.

Reports also indicate that while being escorted to safety post-rescue, an attack was attempted on the convoy.

Point of View

The situation in Kaliachak highlights serious concerns regarding the safety of judicial officers and the rule of law. The swift actions of law enforcement and the involvement of the NIA emphasize the need for accountability and immediate responses to such threats.
