New Delhi, May 14 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu officially administered the oath of office to Justice B.R. Gavai as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) during a swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the national capital.
Justice Gavai, now the 52nd CJI, is expected to serve for more than six months, concluding his term on November 23, 2025.
The Central Government approved Justice Gavai's appointment on April 29, following a recommendation from the former CJI Sanjiv Khanna for him to succeed.
A notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice stated, "In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025."
Justice Gavai was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
Throughout his six years in service, he has participated in nearly 700 Benches, addressing various legal matters, including constitutional and administrative law, civil law, criminal law, commercial disputes, arbitration law, electricity law, education issues, and environmental law.
