Seoul, Jan 9 (NationPress) In an unprecedented achievement, South Korea's cosmetics exports soared to an all-time high last year, fueled by the worldwide fascination with Korean culture and the nation's strategic efforts to broaden its export markets, as reported on Friday.
According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, outbound shipments of Korean beauty products increased by 12.3 percent year-on-year, reaching a remarkable US$11.43 billion in 2025, as per Yonhap news agency.
Breaking it down by country, exports to the United States surged by 15.1 percent to $2.19 billion in 2025, while shipments to China experienced a decline of 19.2 percent, totaling $2.01 billion.
For the first time last year, the U.S. emerged as the leading destination for South Korean cosmetics, showing a consistent growth trend.
Shipments to Japan rose by 5 percent to $1.09 billion, and those to Hong Kong skyrocketed by 21.6 percent to $705 million.
In total, the number of countries importing South Korean cosmetics reached 202 in 2025, a significant increase from 172 in 2024. Exports to Europe, the Middle East, Southwest Asia, and Latin America continued to grow, even as shares bound for the U.S. and China decreased, according to the ministry.
Focusing on product categories, skin care items like moisturizers saw an increase of 11.6 percent, totaling $8.54 billion.
Color cosmetics also saw a rise, climbing 12 percent to $1.51 billion, while body cleansing products surged by 27.3 percent to $590 million.
Notably, fragrance exports soared by 46.2 percent to $60 million in 2025, according to the data.
In a show of support for South Korean cosmetic companies, First Lady Kim Hea Kyung attended a Korean beauty event in Shanghai this week, aiming to bolster exports to the Chinese market, as stated by Cheong Wa Dae.
Kim participated in K-Beauty GLOW WEEK at the Fosun Foundation Art Center during her husband President Lee Jae Myung's visit to China, promoting Korean culture to strengthen ties between the two nations.
She explored pop-up stores featuring new Korean beauty products, tried various items, and observed Chinese influencers livestreaming from the booths.
In informal interviews with influencers, Kim highlighted the appeal of Korean beauty products, stating, "Korean cosmetics provide an extensive range of options tailored to different skin types and seasonal needs, quickly adapting to consumer demands."
