The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the first red alert of the monsoon season for five northern Kerala districts on Saturday, 5 June, as heavy rainfall continues to intensify across the state. Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are under red alert, with three of those districts expected to remain on high alert through Sunday as well.

District-wise Alert Status

Below the red-alert belt, six districts — Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Palakkad, and Pathanamthitta — have been placed under an orange alert, signalling very heavy rainfall. The southern districts of Alappuzha, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram are under a comparatively lower yellow alert. The tiered alert system effectively covers the entire state, reflecting the broad reach of this year's opening monsoon surge.

Ground Impact: Trees Uprooted, Rain Incidents Reported

The strengthening monsoon has already triggered rain-related incidents across several parts of Kerala. Strong winds lashed Kozhikode city on Saturday morning, uprooting trees at multiple locations. Authorities have not yet reported fatalities from the current spell, though conditions remain closely monitored.

Safety Advisory Issued by Authorities

With weather conditions worsening, authorities have released a detailed public safety advisory. Residents in landslide-, mudslide-, and flash flood-prone hilly areas have been asked to relocate to safer locations during daytime hours. People living in low-lying, waterlogging-prone zones have been advised to move to relief camps if necessary.

The public has been warned against entering rivers and water bodies for swimming, fishing, or crossing. Visits to waterfalls, tourist spots, and hilly terrain should be avoided until conditions improve. The Central Water Commission has separately advised those living near riverbanks to remain on high alert. Authorities have also cautioned against travelling on roads near water bodies or in areas at risk from falling trees and downed power lines.
