Laos Strives to Enhance Digital Innovation and Infrastructure

Vientiane, Jan 10 (NationPress) The Ministry of Technology and Communications in Laos is actively working to propel digital innovation, with a focus on creating a resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure for the nation.

Lao Minister of Technology and Communications Boviengkham Vongdara spoke at a press conference commemorating Lao Digital Day on Friday, highlighting the critical need for robust telecommunications and internet infrastructure.

The ministry plans to enhance high-quality telecommunication and internet services in urban centers while extending these services to remote regions.

Efforts will be made to boost the overall quality of the internet and make high-speed access available at a reasonable cost, while reinforcing all digital networks to facilitate improved connectivity for both government entities and the public.

Moreover, measures will be implemented to ensure a high standard of cyber security.

The sectors of technology and communications will persist in cultivating digital skills and developing a workforce capable of supporting digital transformation.

Boviengkham underscored the pressing necessity for digital transformation in Laos and urged all governmental departments to concentrate on establishing a digital economy and constructing a system for public administration in the digital realm.

He encouraged everyone to fully leverage digital technology and the internet to enhance productivity across all sectors, both public and private, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Furthermore, he advised caution in the usage of social media platforms and emphasized the urgent need for swift advancements in the utilization of digital technology.

Last month, the sixth Laos Digital Forum took place in Vientiane, concentrating on the transformative influence of financial technology (fintech) and its implications for the economic future of Laos, marking a significant step in the nation's pursuit of a digitally empowered economy.

The event gathered leaders from the Laos government, financial institutions, businesses, and technology innovators, focusing on strategies to position Laos as a burgeoning participant in the ASEAN digital economy, with fintech serving as a primary driver of growth, as reported by Lao Economic Daily.

During the forum, the Laos Central Bank, the Bank of the Lao PDR (BOL), shared vital updates regarding the regulatory landscape. Participants engaged in discussions about the recently approved Payment Settlement System Law and Banking Law.
