Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Meerut/New Delhi, Dec 22 (NationPress) A Special POCSO Court in Bulandshahr has sentenced five convicts to life imprisonment for their involvement in the 2016 gang-rape case concerning a woman and her minor daughter. This ruling signifies a significant victory for the CBI, which conducted the investigation that ignited widespread outrage across the nation.
Special Judge O.P. Verma, who declared the convicts guilty on Saturday, also ordered each convict to pay a fine of Rs 1.81 lakh, with half of this sum designated as compensation for the victims, according to legal sources.
On that fateful night of July 29, 2016, a family of six traveling from Noida to Shahjahanpur was ambushed on National Highway 91.
Armed assailants punctured the family’s car tires with a metal axle, compelling them to halt near the fields of Dostpur village.
While the men were restrained and assaulted, the woman and her 14-year-old daughter were forcibly taken into nearby fields, where they endured hours of sexual violence and robbery.
Initially investigated by the Uttar Pradesh Police, the case was later handed over to the CBI following an order from the Allahabad High Court on August 12, 2016, amidst public uproar and accusations of police inaction, including claims that the victims’ emergency calls were ignored.
The CBI's first charge-sheet was filed on November 5, 2016, against three of the suspects, followed by a supplementary charge-sheet in April 2018 against three additional individuals.
Throughout the lengthy trial, one convict passed away while in judicial custody.
This case captured national attention not only due to its horrific nature but also because of the dismissive comments made by former U.P. Minister Azam Khan, who referred to the incident as a “political conspiracy,” prompting an apology from the Supreme Court.
