Kolkata, May 6 (NationPress) - The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, made a significant announcement on Tuesday regarding the establishment of a new subdivision in Murshidabad. This move aims to improve law and order in response to the recent communal unrest and riot-like conditions that emerged last month during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Banerjee shared this news on the second day of her tour in Murshidabad.
The proposed subdivision will be formed by dividing the areas of Suti, Farakka, and Dhuliyan, which are currently included in the Jangipur subdivision of Murshidabad.
Remarkably, these areas were among the most severely impacted by the communal violence that took place in the district last month.
This creation of a new subdivision will elevate the total number of subdivisions in Murshidabad to six.
During an administrative review meeting held in Suti, the Chief Minister reiterated her stance that any objections regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Act should be directed towards the national capital, as the state government played no role in its enactment.
"We have no concern about the Waqf (Amendment) Act here. Therefore, I will refrain from commenting further. If you wish to voice your concerns, please go to New Delhi. Always remember, I am here in West Bengal," she stated.
Banerjee also urged the residents of Murshidabad not to fall prey to incitements from BJP leaders or other extremist factions. "I would prefer to sacrifice my life than to divide people based on religion," she emphasized.
Furthermore, she accused Bengali-speaking migrant workers in other states of facing targeted harassment and mistreatment, encouraging them to return to West Bengal, assuring them of ample job opportunities in the state.
