Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) India’s vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana, marked an extraordinary year by receiving the Best International Cricketer (Women) award at the BCCI Naman Awards. The accomplished left-handed batter reflected on her personal achievements and the overall triumph of Indian cricket, notably the victory at the Women’s ODI World Cup.
“This year has been truly remarkable. I can't solely focus on my performance due to our World Cup journey and the joy of winning it, which was incredibly special. However, I feel fulfilled with my contributions to the team, and I'm pleased to have played a part in that,” Mandhana expressed in a BCCI video.
She emphasized the importance of India's resurgence on the international stage in both men's and women’s cricket, stating, “As I mentioned during my speech, securing four World Cups and one Champions Trophy is phenomenal. Indian cricket experienced a few years without a World Cup, which led to various discussions. Yet, our comeback in the last two years and what Indian cricket has accomplished is simply extraordinary. Being part of this evening to honor all the teams is a fantastic experience.”
Mandhana also underscored the necessity of preparedness and support systems that contributed to India’s success. She commended Jay Shah, former BCCI secretary and current ICC chief, for his pivotal role in advancing women's cricket.
“Achieving something remarkable like winning the World Cup requires preparation that begins long before the event. Jay (Shah) sir has been phenomenal over the past three to four years, particularly since the inception of the WPL. The WPL has revolutionized the landscape of women’s cricket. Additionally, the equalization of match fees and other minor improvements have made a significant difference,” she added.
She further acknowledged the crucial role of infrastructure and support staff in creating a winning environment. “The level of support provided, alongside the facilities made available, was exceptional. When these elements are addressed, results naturally follow. The success of the 19 women's team in winning the World Cup, coupled with the WPL nurturing new stars, marks the beginning of something truly amazing,” Mandhana concluded.
