Maoist Area Committee Member with a ₹5 Lakh Bounty: What Happened in Bijapur?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raipur/Bijapur, Dec 19 (NationPress) Security forces achieved a major victory against Maoist insurgency on Friday, eliminating a crucial operative during a fierce encounter in the dense forests of the Indravati area under Bhairamgarh police station in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, a notorious Maoist stronghold.
The operation began at approximately 6:00 a.m. when a District Reserve Guard (DRG) team from Bijapur, acting on reliable intelligence regarding Maoist activity in the Adwara-Kotameta forests, launched a search operation.
Shortly after, sporadic gunfire ensued as the forces confronted the armed group, according to police officials.
Bijapur Superintendent of Police Dr. Jitendra Yadav confirmed the retrieval of a Maoist’s body from the encounter site. The deceased was identified as Fagnu Madvi, aged 35, hailing from Gorna village, who served as an Area Committee Member (ACM) of the Bhairamgarh Area Committee, with a ₹5 lakh bounty on his head.
Among the seized materials were a .303 rifle with a magazine and three rounds, a 9mm pistol with a magazine and nine rounds, two scanner sets, a radio device, a medical kit, cordex wire, a Maoist backpack, a pistol pouch, pamphlets, and various logistical items, underscoring the group's operational capabilities.
Bastar Range Inspector General of Police P. Sundarraj stated that coordinated security operations in 2025 have left Maoism in Bastar struggling to survive, with its organizational structure dismantled and violent efforts rendered ineffective.
He urged remaining Maoists to lay down their weapons and take advantage of the government's surrender and rehabilitation initiatives.
This encounter is part of intensified anti-Naxal campaigns, with Bijapur being a crucial battleground. The year 2025 has been pivotal, with over 280 Maoists neutralized statewide, primarily in the Bastar division, including prominent leaders.
In Bijapur alone, around 144 Maoists were taken down, alongside over 500 arrests and 560 surrenders. These accomplishments, supported by improved intelligence, proactive deployments, and joint operations involving DRG, CRPF CoBRA, and Central forces, have significantly diminished Maoist influence.
The Centre's March 2026 target for the eradication of Left-Wing Extremism seems increasingly attainable, as surrenders rise amid internal disillusionment.
No casualties were reported among security personnel, and combing operations are ongoing to maintain area control.
