Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 29 June met members of the Indian diaspora in Victoria, Seychelles, engaging warmly with community members and posing for photographs during his ongoing State visit to the island archipelago. The visit coincides with Seychelles' 50th National Day celebrations, lending the occasion added historical significance.
Community Welcome and Temple Visit
Following the diaspora interaction, Modi was scheduled to visit the Navashakti Vinayakar Temple in Victoria. Indian community members had made extensive preparations ahead of his arrival, organising cultural programmes and prayer ceremonies in his honour.
One community member said, 'We are very happy that Prime Minister Modi is visiting us on the occasion of the 50th National Day. All the arrangements have been made smoothly. We will pray at the temple for his long life and wish that he continues serving the people of India. We have also organised cultural programmes to welcome him.'
Diaspora member Shashi expressed enthusiasm, saying: 'The Indian community in Seychelles is very excited about PM Modi's visit. We are delighted to welcome him. India and Seychelles share strong bilateral ties, and we look forward to further strengthening this relationship during his visit.'
Dhanlakshmi, another community member who works closely with the Seychellois government, said she felt honoured by the visit and expressed hope that 'given the strong bilateral relationship between India and Seychelles, the Indian government will support the temple's infrastructure development.'
National Day Celebrations and State Visit
On Sunday, 28 June, Modi attended Seychelles' National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. The ceremony featured Seychellois soldiers parachuting into the venue from aircraft bearing national flags, with crowds cheering enthusiastically to mark the nation's 50th anniversary of independence.
Modi arrived in Seychelles on Saturday at the invitation of President Patrick Herminie. He also addressed the National Assembly of Seychelles and held bilateral talks with Herminie.
Highest National Honour Conferred on Modi
On Sunday, Modi was conferred the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' — Seychelles' highest distinction — in recognition of his leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The award acknowledges his long-standing commitment to sustainable growth and a green development vision.
India-Seychelles Strategic Ties
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India and Seychelles share a longstanding partnership rooted in shared historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties. As a key maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean region, Seychelles holds a special place in India's Vision 'MAHASAGAR' — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — and India's broader commitment to the Global South. This visit is widely seen as a reaffirmation of India's deepening engagement with its Indian Ocean neighbourhood at a time of heightened geopolitical interest in the region.
