Key Developments Ahead of June 21
A curtain-raiser press conference was held at Nabanna Sabhaghar on 19 June, attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Prataprao Jadhav. The two leaders released 12 special philatelic covers commemorating International Day of Yoga 2026, in the presence of Chief Postmaster General of the West Bengal Circle Ashok Kumar.
Earlier on Friday, a 'Daud Se Dhyan' marathon was flagged off from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation premises, concluding at the historic Writers' Building. The run was flagged off by Chief Minister Adhikari and attended by ministers Indranil Khan, Agnimitra Paul, and Tapas Roy, along with MLA Bijoy Ojha, Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal, and senior officials.
What Leaders Said
West Bengal Minister Indranil Khan said the state was eagerly awaiting the Prime Minister's arrival. 'West Bengal is going to witness history because Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to Kolkata to observe Yoga Day with all of us. For years, people in West Bengal were not able to observe Yoga Day properly. West Bengal is the land of Swami Vivekananda, and Yoga is deeply connected to our cultural and spiritual heritage,' Khan said.
Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav underlined the global significance of the occasion. 'Yoga has become a global movement, and India is leading that effort,' he said, adding that the Prime Minister's presence would make the Kolkata celebrations particularly special. State Minister Tapas Roy credited Modi's sustained efforts for reviving and popularising Yoga both domestically and internationally.
Scale of Celebrations Across West Bengal
A wide array of events has been planned across Kolkata and the rest of West Bengal in the run-up to 21 June. These include Cycling for Wellness campaigns, Yoga sessions in schools and government offices, mental well-being programmes, women's health initiatives, Yoga sessions for senior citizens, corporate Yoga events, and dedicated programmes for police personnel, fire services staff, and healthcare workers.
On 20 June, 'Vande Yogam' and West Bengal Foundation Day events are scheduled along the Hooghly riverfront, featuring cultural performances, art and photography competitions, and public engagement activities. A mass Yoga demonstration on 500 boats across the Hooghly River is planned, symbolising the connection between Yoga and Bengal's river heritage.
The Main Event at Red Road
The national celebration at Red Road will commence at 5 am IST on 21 June. Thousands of participants are expected on the ground, while millions are likely to join virtually from across India and around the world. The event will also feature Yoga-themed illuminations, special lighting on bridges, and a mega drone show involving nearly 3,000 drones depicting India's Yoga journey and paying tribute to renowned Yoga masters.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said it was a matter of immense pride for West Bengal to host the national celebrations, noting that Kolkata's cultural, intellectual, and spiritual legacy made it a fitting venue. With Prime Minister Modi set to lead the session in person, the 2026 observance is shaping up to be among the largest Yoga Day events held on Indian soil.
