MP Congress cyclothon Indore to Bhopal: Patwari leads protest over NEET leaks, jobs
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Madhya Pradesh Congress on Tuesday, 14 July launched a two-day cyclothon from Indore to Bhopal to spotlight student grievances over irregularities in NEET-UG and CBSE examinations, recurring paper leaks, and rising youth unemployment in the state. The rally is being personally led by MP Congress President Jitu Patwari under the banner of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' (Voice of Students) campaign.
How the Rally Began
The cyclothon flagged off at approximately 8:00 am from RNT Marg, near Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) in Indore — one of Madhya Pradesh's most prominent educational hubs. The choice of location was deliberate, organisers said, intended to amplify the voices of students who have been directly affected by repeated examination malpractices and administrative failures.
Patwari is cycling the entire Indore–Bhopal stretch over two days, aiming to engage directly with young people and their families along the route.
Scale and Participation
Organisers expect around 500 cyclists to join from each district along the route, creating a convoy of more than 2,000 participants drawn from Indore, Dewas, Sehore, and Bhopal. A dedicated roster of permanent cyclists has been assembled, comprising Congress workers, members of Indore's competitive cycling racing groups, and fitness club enthusiasts.
The first leg concluded in Ashta town of Sehore district, where participants are scheduled to stay overnight at Gokuldham Marriage Garden. The second leg resumes on Wednesday, 15 July, from Kothari.
What Patwari Said
'After 25 years of BJP rule in the state and nearly 80 years of Independence, a new idea must emerge — that quality education, completely free of cost, should be available to every section of society,' Patwari said at the launch. He demanded that education from KG to PG be made mandatory and free for all citizens.
Patwari described the cyclothon as a non-political initiative centred on the core message of the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' campaign: ensuring secure, high-quality education and complete transparency in academic and professional examinations. He stressed that addressing irregularities in exams like NEET is a national issue that the Congress is now taking directly to the public.
Broader Context
The cyclothon comes amid sustained national controversy over the NEET-UG 2024 examination, which faced allegations of paper leaks and irregularities affecting hundreds of thousands of medical aspirants across India. The issue has drawn sharp political responses from multiple opposition parties, with Congress making student welfare and examination reform a central plank of its outreach. This is the Madhya Pradesh unit's most visible street-level mobilisation on the education issue to date.
The event is expected to generate public dialogue on education reform, youth empowerment, and governance accountability as cyclists make their way to the state capital.
