New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) Wiaan Mulder, the allrounder for the Proteas, expressed his desire to establish himself in the No.3 Test position within the team's batting order after a commendable performance at the first drop during the recent ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. In that match at Lord's, the 27-year-old scored six and 27 runs, with a significant 61-run partnership with centurion Aiden Markram on day three, which contributed to the Proteas' five-wicket victory over Australia, securing the prestigious mace.
This was only Mulder's fourth appearance batting at No.3 for South Africa, and he is eager to make this position his own moving forward.
"Honestly, I relished batting at three in this Test. I'm not great at just watching, especially knowing I'm next in line to bat; it makes me quite anxious, and I believe everyone feels the same way,” Mulder shared with ICC Digital.
"If someone claims they don’t feel nervous, I think they’re not being truthful. A lot goes through your mind when you’re waiting to bat at three; you need to stay alert from the very first ball.
"I enjoyed the challenge, and I sincerely hope that Shuks (South Africa’s coach Shukri Conrad) envisions me in that role moving forward, as I believe I can significantly contribute," he added.
The No.3 position has been somewhat unsettled recently, with players like Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi, and Tristan Stubbs all taking turns in this vital batting role during South Africa's journey to the WTC final.
"This role helps balance our team effectively. If I bat at three, we can position Kesh anywhere we need, as I can play as the fourth seamer while Kesh serves as our spinner globally.
"This versatility is significant in various conditions, and if I can make runs from that position, it would be incredibly valuable.
"Having more responsibility with the bat aligns well with my personality, and batting at three allows me to have an impact on the game at crucial moments," Mulder further explained.
With the Proteas set to play two Tests against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo shortly, Mulder is likely to get a chance to solidify his claim for the number three spot, especially since key players like Markram, Rickelton, and Stubbs are being rested.
"I haven’t batted extensively at three, so this is another chance to learn, score runs, and influence the game. The mental preparation for this upcoming Test will differ from the WTC final, given that we were up against Australia in what was likely the most significant Test of my career.
"So, getting ready for this challenge will require a different mindset, but my passion for the game drives me; I just want to play. When I spoke with Shooks about it, I said, 'Please don’t even think about not including me'," he concluded.
