Guwahati, Jan 30 (NationPress) The Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court based in Guwahati has handed down sentences to two additional individuals involved in the ABT (Ansarullah Bangla Team) case in Assam, according to sources on Thursday.
NIA officials reported that Mufti Suleiman Ali and Imran Hossen, also known as Imran Hossain, have received sentences involving both imprisonment and fines under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Previously, the special court had convicted and sentenced seven individuals in connection with the same case. The latest two have been sentenced to a simple imprisonment (SI) of 6 months and a fine of Rs 500, along with an additional 14 days of SI if they fail to pay.
They are also subjected to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for the duration already served (2 years, 8 months, and 21 days) under the UAPA.
This case began in March 2022 and concerns an ABT module connected to the banned international terror group, Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent (AQIS).
Led by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam, also known as Haroon Rashid, this module was operational in the Barpeta district of Assam.
In August 2022, the NIA had filed an initial chargesheet against eight individuals in this case, followed by a supplementary chargesheet for two more in August 2023. The investigation and trial are ongoing.
Simultaneously, the Assam Police's Special Task Force (STF) has detained 14 affiliates of the ABT, a Bangladeshi terror group linked to AQIS, from Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala.
The STF conducted these arrests as part of 'Operation Praghat', targeting fundamentalist groups and Global Terrorist Organisations (GTO).
According to STF sources, the 14 apprehended individuals, which include Bangladeshi nationals, were operating under the guidance of Md Farhan Israk, a close associate of Jasimuddin Rahmani, the ABT leader. The ABT dispatched Md Sad Radi, also known as Shab Sheikh, a resident of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, to India to disseminate their dangerous ideology among those with similar beliefs.
Sad Radi, aged 32, was captured in Kerala in December of the previous year.
