Imphal, April 18 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Manipur, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, declared on Saturday that the investigation into the tragic shooting incident in Ukhrul district will now be managed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for an extensive inquiry.
Law enforcement officials reported that two individuals from the Naga community were fatally shot along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) in Ukhrul district when unidentified gunmen opened fire on vehicles traveling in the area.
The victims, identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao (45) and Yaruingam Vashum (42), were confirmed deceased by authorities.
In a strong condemnation of the attack, the Chief Minister expressed on social media that the decision to assign the case to the NIA was made to facilitate a thorough investigation.
The families of the deceased will receive ex-gratia compensation; Chinaoshang, a retired member of the Naga Regiment, hailed from Tashar village, while Yaruingam was from Kharasom village.
Singh also mentioned that security forces have initiated operations to capture those behind the assault.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families during this difficult time,” the Chief Minister stated.
Earlier on the same day, he convened a meeting with Major General Gaurav Sharma, the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), to assess the current law and order situation in Manipur.
In a subsequent social media update, Singh noted that the briefing by the Inspector General at the Civil Secretariat confirmed that while the situation remains tense, it is under control, and security forces are managing disturbances with care and restraint.
He urged residents to be vigilant against rumors and misinformation that could potentially lead to unrest.
“The government is dedicated to delivering justice, which will be pursued diligently, all while ensuring peace and stability throughout the state,” he asserted.
In related news, a delegation from the Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation met with the Chief Minister on Saturday to discuss various pressing issues concerning the current climate in the state.
Singh remarked on Facebook, “The members conveyed their serious concerns regarding the current situation and submitted a memorandum addressing three critical matters.”
He emphasized that the government is taking these concerns seriously.
“Our commitment to restoring peace and normalcy is unwavering, as we recognize that stability is vital for the successful execution of all development and welfare initiatives. Every necessary measure will be taken to re-establish order and ensure a secure environment for our citizens,” Singh concluded.
