Sao Paulo (Brazil), Nov 8 (NationPress) Lando Norris has solidified his lead in the Formula 1 world championship standings with a decisive victory in the Sao Paulo GP Sprint, increasing his advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri to nine points, while Max Verstappen fell further behind after finishing in fourth place.
The day brought mixed outcomes for McLaren. Norris executed a flawless drive from pole position to claim his first Sprint win of the season, while Piastri’s championship aspirations took a significant hit following a crash in wet conditions at turn three on lap six. Running third at the moment, the Australian hit the inside curb with his left-front tire, skimming through standing water before spinning into the barriers.
He wasn't the only one to suffer from the challenging conditions — Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto also crashed at the same corner shortly after, with Colapinto experiencing the most severe impact.
While Hulkenberg was able to return to the pits despite his damaged vehicle, both Piastri and Colapinto had to retire immediately. This incident led to a 22-minute red flag period for barrier repairs and vehicle recovery.
Prior to the interruption, Norris had a perfect start from pole, resisting an early challenge from Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli. After the restart, which was conducted as a rolling start, Norris maintained his composure under pressure from Antonelli, whose Mercedes was equipped with the more durable medium tires in contrast to Norris’ softs.
The young Italian kept the pressure until the chequered flag, but Norris’ poise and tire management proved crucial as he crossed the finish line to secure eight essential points — a flawless response to his teammate's unfortunate DNF.
Behind them, George Russell showcased a strong performance, finishing third, while Verstappen, who struggled to advance from sixth on the grid, had to settle for fourth — meaning Norris now leads the Dutchman by 39 points heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc made a great recovery to overtake Fernando Alonso late in the race for fifth, with Lewis Hamilton moving up three places from 11th to take seventh. Pierre Gasly rounded out the points for Alpine in eighth.
