Seoul, Aug 3 (NationPress) Pak In-chol, the chairman of North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly, engaged in discussions with his counterparts from Russia and three additional countries in Geneva, Switzerland, during a global assembly leaders' meeting, as reported by state media on Sunday.
Pak's meetings included the chairperson of Russia's Federation Council, the leaders of the Mongolian and Vietnamese assemblies, and a deputy chairperson from the Lao parliament. This occurred while he participated in the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which took place from last Tuesday to Thursday, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
During the discussions, Valentina Matvienko, the speaker of Russia's parliament, highlighted the “close friendship” between the leaders of North Korea and Russia as a “fundamental element” that has propelled their bilateral relationship to unprecedented heights, as reported by the KCNA.
The agency further noted that Matvienko mentioned how Russia-North Korea relations have weathered numerous challenges since the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership treaty. She reiterated Russia's commitment to solidarity with North Korea.
China's top legislator Zhao Leji was also present at the international event, but no discussions occurred between him and Pak, indicating that relations may still struggle to fully recover after tensions arose due to Pyongyang's close ties with Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
This significant global event, hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, has been organized every five years since 2000, with North Korea consistently sending a representative.
Additionally, South Korea's National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik participated in this year's event, yet no meetings took place between him and Pak either.
