Kolkata, May 3 (NationPress) The Odisha government’s directive to the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration in Puri to investigate the controversy related to the newly inaugurated Jagannath Temple, referred to as a cultural centre at Digha in East Midnapore district, is entirely warranted, asserts Agnimitra Paul, a BJP legislator and fashion designer-turned-politician from West Bengal.
The temple in Digha was officially opened on April 30 and is documented as the Shree Jagannath Dham Cultural Centre in West Bengal government records, likely to mitigate issues regarding the use of public funds for religious constructions.
The principal concern raised by the Odisha government pertains to the term 'Jagannath Dham' being used for the temple at Digha.
In support of Odisha's objections, Paul expressed to IANS on Saturday that the controversies surrounding the Digha temple could hurt the sentiments of traditional Hindus, particularly those from Odisha, who hold the Shree Jagannatha Dham temple in Puri dear.
“Numerous individuals from Odisha reside in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has disrespected them. Does she presume she can act without regard for the Indian Constitution simply because she holds the office of Chief Minister? Previously, she inaugurated Durga Puja idols prematurely, disregarding the auspicious timeline required for such events. In Hinduism, there are four sacred Dhams: Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram, and Puri. While anyone, including the Chief Minister, can construct a Jagannath Temple, it cannot be labeled a Dham,” Paul remarked to IANS.
He further stated that the ongoing controversies are particularly irritating in light of the attacks and atrocities faced by Hindus in West Bengal.
“Hindus are being murdered in West Bengal. They are being forced off their lands… Hindu homes and temples are being destroyed. Is the Chief Minister attempting to justify her minority appeasement politics through a balancing act? Therefore, the actions of the Odisha government are justified,” Paul concluded.
