Chandigarh, June 20 (NationPress) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab has raised concerns over Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s comments stating, “we will not allocate water from the Indus River to Punjab”, claiming he is purposefully politicizing the situation.
AAP spokesperson Neel Garg asserted that the authority to determine river water distribution lies with the Central government, emphasizing that Omar Abdullah cannot unilaterally make such decisions.
He underscored that Punjab requires water, thereby deserving its share of the Indus River resources, recalling that during the conflict with Pakistan, the Indian government opted to nullify the Indus Water Treaty.
“It is now the responsibility of the Indian government to allocate the remaining water justly and ensure Punjab receives its rightful portion,” he stated.
Garg pointed out that like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab is also a border state. “Whenever conflict arises, Punjab becomes the frontline. And when the nation requires food grains, it becomes the granary of the country. Now that water is available, Punjab has a legitimate claim over it.”
He highlighted the urgency of Punjab’s water needs, noting that many regions have entered a critical dark zone.
“In our effort to sustain the nation’s food supply, we have been deprived of our own water resources. With the Indus Water Treaty annulled, Punjab has the primary claim over this water, which will not only revive our parched lands but also enhance our agriculture. When farmers thrive, the nation thrives,” he expressed.
Garg also mentioned that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that following the annulment of the Indus Treaty, Punjab should receive the water currently obstructed from flowing to Pakistan.
“Thus, the Government of India must address this issue,” he urged.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also expressed astonishment at Omar Abdullah’s statement. Former Minister and senior SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema remarked that what Abdullah is advocating is yet another attempt to unjustly treat Punjab.
He stated that while contributing to the nation’s food supply, Punjab has suffered a significant loss of groundwater, which has dropped to alarming levels.
He noted a substantial decline in river water levels, adding that Punjab farmers have incurred heavy debts to meet the country's food requirements.
Previously, addressing the construction of a canal by the Indian government to divert excess water from three rivers of the Indus system to Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan, Chief Minister Abdullah referenced the longstanding Shahpur Kandi barrage dispute with Punjab, questioning, “Did they allocate us water?”
