Quetta, June 28 (NationPress) Nadia Baloch, sister of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) Central Organiser Mahrang Baloch, made a heartfelt plea on Saturday to lawyers, human rights organizations, the Baloch community, and all political figures to advocate for the prompt release of the BYC leader and other activists who have been unlawfully detained by Pakistani authorities.
"My sister, Dr. Mahrang Baloch, along with her associates, was detained on March 22 under the draconian law of 3MPO (Maintenance of Public Order). Since that date, we have pursued every legal avenue to achieve their release," Nadia expressed in a video message shared by the BYC.
"Legally, their detention period concluded on June 22, with Bibarg Baloch's period ending on June 25. A Review Board comprising the Chief Justice and senior judges is mandated to meet, assess their case, and hear them personally. However, no such Board has convened," she noted.
When questioned about the legal justification for their continued imprisonment, she stated, "The only answer we received was unfounded excuses claiming that the 'situation outside isn’t suitable,' leading to an extension of their detention by 15 more days."
Nadia asserted that no individual has the authority to prolong their detention, emphasizing that only a formal Review Board can make such decisions, and no official notification has been issued.
"We visited the prison and waited the entire day. When we pressed for information, they finally presented a document but prohibited us from copying or photographing it. We were provided no official information. No Review Board has ever met. This is a blatant violation of the law," she remarked.
Addressing her concerns, she mentioned that in such an environment of lawlessness, even the act of breathing has become perilous, declaring that "these oppressive laws are strangling us all."
Earlier that day, in a letter to Civil Society Friends and the media, Nadia expressed her profound worry for her sister, indicating that Mahrang is enduring significant psychological stress in prison.
She underscored that the health of the BYC leader has significantly deteriorated, having suffered illness for the past three days without access to adequate medical care.
"Last night, she became critically ill and experienced severe vomiting. A doctor was finally summoned this morning, but the delay in medical intervention is intolerable. I suspect she is being intentionally kept in conditions that are exacerbating her health, and I fear her food may be tainted. This morning, I attempted to visit her, but my sister, Iqra, was denied access. I was able to see her for only a few minutes. She appeared extremely weak, ill, and delicate," Nadia revealed.
Additionally, Nadia noted that Mahrang has repeatedly raised issues regarding surveillance cameras, inadequate bedding, poor food quality, and the violation of her rights as a political prisoner.
"Despite these challenges, she remains resilient. However, her health is in jeopardy. Internet services were disrupted in Quetta today to silence her voice. I implore everyone to continue advocating for her and all detained Baloch prisoners," Nadia concluded.
