Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) Paris Paralympics 2024 gold medalist Harvinder Singh and bronze medalist Sheetal are among the prominent para archers participating in the Para National Archery Championship 2026, which commenced at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, a division of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), on Thursday.
The championship, organized by the Punjab Archery Association, runs from January 30 to February 2.
More than 190 para-archers from over 20 states across India are taking part in this event, showcasing several elite athletes including Padma Shri recipient Harvinder, Arjuna Award winner Rakesh Kumar, and Arjuna Awardee and Paralympic bronze medalist Sheetal, alongside other international competitors.
A special classification initiative for emerging para-archers is also being held during the championship, giving new talent the chance to reach national and international stages. Furthermore, blind archery has been included at the National Championship level for the first time, representing a significant advancement for para archery.
According to national para archery coach Abhilasha Chaudhary, “This National Championship serves as a crucial platform for para archers throughout India. Experienced international competitors are joined by young athletes. Icons like Harvinder Singh, Sheetal Devi, and Rakesh Kumar have inspired the nation by securing medals.”
Harvinder expressed his thoughts to IANS, stating, “This tournament demonstrates the growing interest in the sport. When I began competing in the Para Nationals in 2016, participation was minimal, yet today, numerous young and seasoned athletes are emerging from all over the country. Increased media coverage will promote awareness, encouraging more para-athletes to pursue this sport and build their futures.”
Sheetal, who trains at Punjabi University in Patiala, remarked, “I am thrilled to witness so many fresh young athletes in the National Championship. The weather and environment are fantastic. I take pride in being part of this championship at NIS Patiala.”
