Chandigarh, March 2 (NationPress) The Punjab government has rolled out psychometric assessments aimed at helping girl students identify their strengths and aptitudes, announced the State School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Sunday.
The assessments are set to be administered to Class 10 students enrolled in government schools, with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) allocating over Rs 6.56 crore across all districts for this initiative.
Approximately 93,819 students will benefit from this program, covering all girls by March 31.
To facilitate effective execution, district-level committees led by District Education Officers (Secondary) have been established throughout the state. These committees will manage the testing process and ensure all operations are monitored within their jurisdictions. The primary goal of this initiative is to assess students’ mental capabilities, interests, and personality traits to assist them in making informed career decisions, according to the minister.
Bains pointed out that many students experience uncertainty regarding their future career paths after completing their Class 10 board exams. This decision has a significant influence on their choice of stream in Class 11.
While private schools typically offer career counselling, students in government schools often lack this guidance, leading them to depend on their peers' choices. This frequently results in students opting for streams that may not correspond with their true interests and abilities, ultimately impeding their career growth.
Recognizing the significance of this situation, the minister noted that the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government has implemented the psychometric assessment to provide government school students with comparable opportunities to those in private schools, empowering them to make confident career choices. This initiative will not only enhance students' confidence and awareness regarding their future but also uplift the quality and standards of education in government schools, he added.
