Mumbai, July 13 (NationPress) Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao, who recently starred in the action thriller “Maalik,” has shared his profound respect for Bengali cinema.
He reminisced about its illustrious past, during which renowned filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak were crafting some of the nation's most exceptional films. The ‘Stree’ actor highlighted the cultural depth and cinematic excellence of that era, dubbing it one of the most significant periods in Indian film history.
In a special interview with IANS, Rao conveyed his strong enthusiasm for Bengali cinema, noting that there was a time when it was delivering some of the finest films ever produced in the country.
When discussing his link to Bengali cinema—especially given that his wife, actress Patralekha, hails from a Bengali background and he has been heard translating Bengali to Hindi—the actor revealed that he closely follows Bengali films, particularly the classics. He expressed admiration for the legendary directors like Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, whose contributions he respects deeply.
“I've immersed myself in the early Bengali cinema—when Ray and Ghatak were active. I’ve seen most of their work, I believe. There was a time when Bengali cinema was thriving. They were producing the best films in this country. Even in Bollywood, during the 40s and 50s, Bengali cinema had a formidable impact. Yes, indeed—there was remarkable cinema emerging from Bengal during that period.”
Attributing his artistic perspective to Bengali cinema, Rajkummar remarked, “I’m sure there are still fascinating filmmakers today, but honestly, I haven’t watched many recent Bengali films. The last one I enjoyed was Labour of Love, directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta. However, I feel a strong connection to it, and I’m surrounded by many Bengalis in my life.”
It’s worth noting that Rajkummar Rao’s wife, Patralekha, comes from a Bengali family. Though she has not acted in any Bengali films, her career has largely been in Hindi cinema and web series.
