Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday, 9 June sharply condemned the rejection of Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan's nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh, calling it a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conspiracy against democratic processes. The Returning Officer rejected Natarajan's nomination during scrutiny, citing alleged non-disclosure of a pending legal case in her affidavit.

'After vote chori and SIR, they are now resorting to seat chori,' Revanth Reddy posted on X. He further called the development 'an assault on democracy,' adding: 'People's voices are being stifled. This is a dark day for Indian democracy and needs to be condemned by all citizens. We will all fight for justice.'

Why the Nomination Was Rejected

Natarajan, who serves as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Telangana, had filed her nomination for one of the three Rajya Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh. The Returning Officer reportedly acted on a complaint by senior BJP leader and minister in the Mohan Yadav government, Kailash Vijayvargiya. The complaint alleged that a case involving Natarajan pending before a Telangana court was not disclosed in her nomination affidavit.

Natarajan's Response

Speaking at a press conference in Bhopal, Natarajan accused the BJP of 'muzzling democracy and the Constitution,' framing the episode as an escalation from 'vote theft' to 'seat theft.' 'When the number of members was not adequate, and the BJP fielded a third candidate, it all started from there. We began to understand that they are doing the politics of muzzling democracy and the Constitution,' she said. She also alleged the party was 'clearly attempting to manipulate the Rajya Sabha election just as they previously subverted elections in Madhya Pradesh,' and linked the fight to Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi's broader campaign for democratic values.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud also posted on X, stating that the rejection 'raises serious questions about the state of democratic institutions.' He said: 'Democracy cannot survive when political manipulation overrides the will of the people. This disturbing development must be opposed by everyone who believes in fairness, justice, and constitutional values. We stand united in the fight to defend democracy.'
