Orlando, June 27 (NationPress) Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola disclosed that midfielder Rodri expressed a desire to play beyond the initial plan during Thursday's 5-2 triumph in the FIFA Club World Cup against Juventus.
Rodri, who was returning from an ACL injury sustained in September 2024, was expected to play for only 45 minutes in his first start back. However, Guardiola revealed he had to adjust his strategy.
“We needed to take a step. We were fortunate that the weather was slightly overcast; it was quite warm, but he needed the minutes,” he stated.
“Initially, we planned for 20, then 25, and so on. At half-time, he insisted, 'I want to play five or ten minutes more'. The game was in our favor, and he managed the transitions well. In the previous matches, we struggled with those,” Guardiola was quoted as saying on the club's official site.
“His significance is undeniable. When the best player in the world is absent, it’s a noticeable gap. I’m pleased with his performance for 60 minutes, and I hope he continues to contribute as he always has since joining us.”
In this match, Erling Haaland also made headlines by scoring shortly after coming on as a substitute, marking his 300th career goal for club and country.
“Congratulations are in order. Scoring 300 goals at just 24 years old is quite an achievement. You wouldn’t believe it, but I managed 11 goals in 11 years! I have great respect for outstanding strikers. I'm thrilled for Erling and his goal, especially his involvement in tight spaces,” Guardiola commented.
With this win over Juventus, City leads the scoring charts in the tournament with 13 goals, surpassing Bayern Munich. After a strong performance at Camping World Stadium, Guardiola's squad is set to face Al Hilal in the Round of 16.
