New Delhi, Aug 13 (NationPress) A significant meeting took place in the capital to discuss the revival of flight operations at Sikkim's Pakyong Airport, which has been inactive since June 2024, as noted by MP Indra Hang Subba.
The gathering, chaired by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol at Udaan Bhawan, included Sikkim MP Subba, senior officials from the ministry, and representatives from SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Alliance Air.
Pakyong Airport Director Balasaheb Pote provided insights on the current operational status, recent advancements, and suggested infrastructure enhancements necessary for establishing sustainable and reliable flight services.
As per an official statement, Subba highlighted the vital role of Pakyong Airport in improving connectivity between Sikkim and the rest of India.
He warned that the ongoing suspension of flights was negatively impacting the local populace, the tourism industry, and overall economic growth.
During the meeting, crucial operational and technical challenges were addressed, including the influence of weather on flights, the necessity for appropriate aircraft deployment, and plans for more dependable operations.
Mohol reassured Subba of the Ministry of Civil Aviation's commitment to facilitating the swift resumption of services.
He stated that the ministry would collaborate closely with airlines and relevant stakeholders to resolve the issues affecting operations.
Airline representatives expressed their willingness to work with authorities to guarantee reliable, long-term connectivity to the Himalayan region.
Subba expressed gratitude to the Union minister, officials, and airline representatives for their dedication to reinstating this essential air link.
"Pakyong Airport is not merely an infrastructure project - it serves as a lifeline for Sikkim. We must prioritize the resumption of services in a sustainable manner," he emphasized in the statement.
Pakyong Airport, located approximately 31 km from Gangtok, was inaugurated in 2018 as one of India’s highest airports. While it initially enhanced air connectivity to the state, operations have been frequently disrupted due to technical and weather-related issues.
The most recent suspension, which commenced in June this year, has compelled travelers to depend on airports in neighboring states, thereby increasing travel time and costs.
