Rawalpindi, Feb 25 (NationPress) Following persistent rainfall that nullified their Champions Trophy match against South Africa in Rawalpindi, Australia’s captain Steve Smith stated that his team is now preparing for their next challenge, which they must win against Afghanistan in their concluding Group B match to secure their place in the semifinals.

Australia achieved a victory over England by five wickets in their opening match, successfully chasing down a target of 352 in Lahore to earn two points. However, the abandonment of the match against South Africa meant that both teams shared a point on Tuesday.

With South Africa now leading Group B with three points and a net run rate of +2.140, Australia, currently in second place with +0.475, must defeat Afghanistan to remain in contention, unless England loses one of their two remaining fixtures in this eight-team tournament.

“I checked the weather forecast a few days ago and saw rain was expected, but I didn’t anticipate a complete washout. It’s not ideal, but there’s nothing we can do,” Smith remarked during the post-match presentation.

“The situation is straightforward now. We need to focus on the next match against Afghanistan. A win will secure our position in the top four. They are a formidable team on their day, as is every team in this tournament. That’s what makes this tournament exciting; any of the eight top teams can shine on any given day,” he continued.

In their most recent ODI encounter during the 2023 ODI World Cup at Wankhede Stadium, Afghanistan nearly caused an upset against Australia before Glenn Maxwell delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a memorable double-century to clinch the victory for Australia.

South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma conveyed his disappointment with the result, expressing his eagerness to participate in their inaugural match against Australia in the Champions Trophy.

“It’s frustrating. We would have loved to play. Both teams entered the match with high confidence, and the mere mention of Australia would have our players eager to compete,” he commented.

Australia will face Afghanistan in their final Group B match on February 28, while South Africa will take on England in their concluding game on March 1.
